What Are The Ecofriendly Alternatives To Gasoline?

One of the main problems that is facing motorists, and on a larger level the government of the country is that gasoline prices are increasing irreversibly, and that oil stores on the planet are starting to dwindle, so looking for alternatives to gasoline is something that has to be on the agenda. There are already a range of hybrid cars on the market, which can reduce the use of gasoline and help to stretch the resource further, but ultimately there will have to be practical and effective alternatives that do not depend on the finite resources of the planet.

Probably the most advanced technology for cars at the moment is that of the electric car, and it is something that is improving significantly, but there are still plenty of hurdles which will need to be overcome with the technology, and these can be quite prohibitive. The usual objections to this technology are those of practicality of having a battery which means that long distance journeys aren't possible, without frequent lengthy stops to recharge the battery, and the performance of the vehicle when compared with the gas engine is also something that would need to be improved.

Another option that is being hailed as the future of motoring is the hydrogen fuel cell, which is certainly effective, and in theory can be used by the hydrogen, which is a major part of the earth's atmosphere, but with this as well there are a number of hurdles to be overcome. It has proved to be quite problematic to efficiently and successfully extract hydrogen from the atmosphere, but if this can be achieved, then the hydrogen fuel cell car is something which could be a practical reality, and the only emission from such an engine is that of water.

There are a number of different technologies that are also discussed as a potential ecofriendly alternative to gasoline, but these have had limited success so far. There have been plenty of prototypes created for electric cars that are powered by solar cells, but in countries that don't have a lot of sunshine this can be a big prohibitive factor. There are also options such as bio-fuel that is extracted from plants, and there are also cars which can run on used cooking oil, but these are coming from another finite resource, and are unlikely to be a big contributor to the energy solution.

At the moment there is no doubt that gasoline is still king when it comes to the energy that is going to be used for driving cars, but this is something that is going to have to change, as the stocks of oil continue to become less, and the cost of gas because of the demand for fuel is going to continue to increase. Much like the change from DVD to Blu-ray or HD-DVD, it is still open to see which technology will come out on top, but eventually one will take the lead, and when this happens the move from gasoline to an alternative fuel will start to happen in much larger numbers.
