What Are The Characteristics Of A 'Green Car'?

If a survey would have been carried out thirty years ago, or maybe as recently as fifteen years ago, it is probable that the majority of people that would have been asked about what a green car was would have assumed that it was referring to the color of the paint, but this is an impression which has completely changed. The ability of a car to be friendly to the environment, and to be the opposite of the giant gas guzzlers that have been popular in the country for so long is the start of what is generally considered to be a green car.

Eco CarThe first measure that is often used in identifying whether a vehicle should be considered a green car is how much carbon is emitted into the atmosphere by the vehicle, and the lower the amount the better it will be, which usually means that it will either need to have an engine that doesn't run on fossil fuel, or that it has a small engine. However, this isn't the only feature that can be considered an important part of the green car, as there are some cars which may not produce much carbon, but either because of their emissions of another type, or the materials used in making the car, it can still be harmful to the environment.

One of the most popular types of engines that are found in a green car is the hybrid engine, which really has been pioneered by some of the Japanese car manufacturers, and this is essentially a combination of a standard gas engine, which is accompanied by an electric motor. At some instances having a hybrid engine will be running on the electric motor, which will usually be at lower speeds, and then once the speed increases the gas engine will kick in, and while the gas engine is working, this is also charging the electric motor for when it is required again.

Another type of green car that is growing in popularity is that of the electric engine, and especially when it is looked at as a solution for those living in cities or in the suburbs, it can be a viable option that is not only a good green car, but it is also something that can reduce the costs of motoring too. However, the drawback with electric cars at the moment is that they need to be charged quite frequently, and if the battery is flat then it can require some time to charge it up again.

The main feature of a green car is that it is much kinder to the environment than the standard vehicle, and that it is less damaging and selfish in terms of the finite resources of the planet that it uses. There are many different ways in which this objective can be achieved, and the technologies to be found within green cars are at the very forefront of modern motoring, and will continue to be the most important area of research for car manufacturers for many years to come.
